The student has good print awareness. Her phonemic awareness
is fairly good, but sometimes she mixes up sounds, such as the “sh” and “ch”.
She knows the sounds that letters make, and sounds them out well. She reads a
bit slowly, choppy, and not very fluently.
Print Awareness: Read to the student from a book with large
letters and words.
Phonemic Awareness: When working with rhyming words, have
the student respond to a pair of words with a smile card when the words rhyme,
and a sad card when they don’t. Make sure to have the student repeat the pair
of rhyming words afterwards to help him see the rhyme.
Phonics: Give a group of words, and have the student group
them according to the beginning phoneme.
Fluency: Model fluent reading, focus on comprehension
strategies, such as asking questions, summarizing, retelling.
